Artist Statement"Being born and growing up during the civil war in Guatemala created in me emotions of rage, fear, and uncertainty, like those I feel when facing mental illness within my family. Suffering is an inextricable part of life that paradoxically coexists with happiness as dialectical oppositions. The beauty of a fertile and colorful country serving as inspiration in my work, as well as the unconditional love for my loved ones who struggle with these illnesses, have led me to explore the conflicting emotions they hold. Through my work painting flowers, I evoke the reconciliation of both feelings by using them as an analogy, in which, like the human mind, they possess the qualities of being resilient and fragile at the same time.My intention is to create more awareness by removing the stigma towards mental illness, recognizing that just as flowers are part of the ecosystem, mental illness is part of our society, equally beautiful. We can find joy in the midst of suffering!"
